Rules of the letters LL - Y

The letters LL and Y, have the same sound, so Words that are written with LL or with Y may lead to confusion.

Let's look at some rules that will help us know when we should write with LL or with Y.

The verbs ending in llir - llar.

zambullir, atropellar, engullir, estallar.

Exceptions:

apoyar, ensayar, rayar (hacer rayas), desmayar.

The verb llevar and its compound conllevar, in all its times.

llevaba, llevarán, conllevando.

Nº. 3

The verbs llover and lloviznar, in all its times.

llueve, lloviznando, llovió.

Nº. 4

The verb llenar and its compound rellenar, in all its times.

relleno, llenaba, llenaron, rellenarían.

Nº. 5

The words ended in illo -illa -allo -ello -alle -elle.

carrillo, bombilla, sencilla, fallo, bello, calle, muelle.

Exceptions:

Mayo (month), lacayo, rayo (thunderbolt), tocayo, plebeyo, leguleyo.

Rules of Words that are written with Y

Nº. 1

The gerund of the verb ir, and its forms of the Present Subjunctive.

yendo, vaya, vayas, vayamos, vayáis, vayan.

Nº. 2

The verbs ayunar and desayunar, in all its times.

ayunas, desayunábamos, ayunaron, desayuno.

Nº. 3

The ending yendo (gerund) of the verbs whose infinitive ends in aer - eer - uir.

cayendo, leyendo, huyendo, contrayendo, proveyendo.

Nº. 4

Verbal endings -uyo -uya -uyes -uyamos -uyesen -uyeron, of the verbs whose infinitive ends in uir, buir, cluir.

of huir huyan, of intuir intuyes, of contribuir contribuyesen, of concluir concluyeron.

Nº. 5

The words that begin with yu - yer.

yuca, yerno, yugo, yerro, yugular, yerba, yermo.

Exceptions:

lluvia, lluvioso, llueve.

Nº. 6

Plurals of the words that end in y in singular.

of Rey reyes, of buey bueyes, of ley leyes, of convoy convoyes.

Words that contain the syllable yec.

proyectar, trayecto, inyección, abyecto.

Nº. 8

The verb forms of verbs that do not have Y in their infinitive.

After consonant is written y.

subyugar, cónyuge, disyuntiva, desyemar.

The copulative conjunction y. This conjunction is e if the second word starts with i (The initial h is ignored).

Exceptions:
