Rules of the letter X

The sound of the letter X is different according to the place it occupies in the word.

If it goes between vowels, or at the end of a word, its pronunciation is similar to ks, as in the words éxito, exacto or tórax.

When it appears at the beginning of a word, it is often pronounced as a s, which usually creates doubts when writing the words that sound like s but are written with x, how exterior or expresar.

Let's see some rules that will help us know when we should write with x.

Words that begin with the syllable ex followed by the group pr.

Nº. 2

Almost all words that begin with the syllable ex followed by the group pl.

Exceptions:

Nº. 3

Words that begin with Xeno- (extranjero - foreign), Xero- (seco, árido - dry, arid) y Xilo- (madera - wood).

Nº. 4

The words that begin with the prefix Ex- (fuera, más allá, cargo en el que se ha cesado - outside, beyond, position in which it has ceased).

The words that begin with the prefix Extra- (fuera de - outside).
