Rules of the letter H

The letter H is not pronounced (it is silent) in Spanish, so it is very important to know the rules for the use of this letter.

In some foreign words, such as hadware or hamster, it is pronounced as a soft "J".
Also, in some regions of Spain and Latin America tend to pronounce the "H" in those words that in old Spanish were written with "F".

Rules of Words that are written with H

Nº. 1

All the forms of verbs whose infinitive is written with H.

había, habré, hago, hacía, habito, habitaba, hablo, hablé, hallaba, hallaré.

Nº. 2

The words that begin by hum-.

humano, húmedo, humilde, humo, humor.

Exceptions:

umbela, umbilical, umbral y umbría.

Nº. 3

The words that begin by hecto- (cien), helio- (sol), hetero- (distinto), hepta- (siete), hexa-(seis), homo- (igual).

hectómetro, heliógrafo, heterogéneo, heptaedro, hexágono, homófono.

Nº. 4

The words that begin by herb-, herm-, hist-, holg-, horm-, horr-, hosp- and host-.

herbicida, hermano, historia, holgazán, hormiga, horrible, hospital, hostelería.

Exceptions:

erbio, ermita, ermitaño, istmo, ostentar (and its derivatives), ostra (and its derivatives).

Nº. 5

The words that begin by hemi-, hidr-, higr-, hiper-, hipo-.

hemiciclo, hidroavión, higrómetro, hipérbole, hipopótamo.

Exceptions:

emigrar (and its derivatives), eminencia, emitir (and its derivatives).

Nº. 6

The words that begin with the diphthongs hia-, hie-, hue-, hui-, and its derivatives.

hiato, hierro, hielo, hueco, huele, huir, huidizo.

Exceptions:

oquedad (of hueco), orfandad y orfanato (of huerfano), osamenta, osario, óseo y osificar (of hueso), oval, ovario, ovíparo, ovoide y óvulo (of huevo).

Nº. 7

The words that begin with mo y za followed by a vowel.

mohín, moho, zaherir, zahón.

Exceptions:

Moisés and zaino.

In addition to the exceptions that appear in the rules, derivatives are also exceptions.

ostentar ⇒ ostentación; emigrar ⇒ emigrante.
